The Change in Filling Labour Roles

Jordan Betteridge • Jun 02, 2021

Has your construction company struggled with filling roles & having a complete secure workforce?
We say you’re not alone!

We have noticed a very positive demand for our services. We provide labourers & skilled tradespeople to construction projects all over Sydney and beyond. The difficulty in finding ‘the one’ has been a common problem. No don’t worry it’s not you! We believe it’s directly linked to the effects of covid, the closure of international borders & the lack of new talent.

The Australian Government Working Holiday Maker visa report uncovers that December 2020 seen an 80.9% decrease in granted WHV than the year previous. We know everyone is tired of hearing about Covid & using it as a blame game, but those statistics speak for themselves. A decrease of that size is going to have massive knock-on effect. However, with that being said construction has been one of the few industries to continue during the pandemic after the PM identified building & construction as an economic priority

Quite a big majority of our talent pool was candidates on WHV’s simply because the short term and flexible placements suited their travel plans better than settled residents who require more long-term placements. So as a labour hire service we relied heavily on the influx of new candidates arriving fresh off the boat.

Additionally, there are fewer young people interested in entering the construction industry. Since 2016 trade apprenticeships have declined by 21.5%. Large numbers of high skilled workers will be needed in the coming years to support the fast-tracked projects approved by the Australian government. A further $1.5 billion was committed to 15 priority projects which is expected to support over 66,000 jobs. ‘

The combination of these factors has affected the recruiting for many sectors & construction is one of them. What does this mean for us? It means in some cases it might take us a little longer than usual to source the perfect candidate. It can make it more challenging but here at TradeConnex we love a challenge & make it our mission to rise to it.
